Menopause happens to women around the age of 45 up to 55 years old. When this happens, the body will no longer release some eggs, and the menstrual cycle will come to an end. And because of this, pregnancy is no longer a possibility for women on menopause. For some women, these changes happen all at once, while others would go through a gradual change. However it happens, menopause could certainly affect a woman’s body and feelings.

To know more about menopause, it is important that you are aware about the gradual change that you have to go through leading to menopause, and this stage is called the perimenopausal stage. This stage will take place two to 12 years, and is the result of the ovaries’ slowed production of estrogen, which would result to the fluctuation of the hormones and would lead to some physical change. At this time, your period will become irregular and inconsistent, sometimes it could be heavy, and there are times that it is very light, and you cannot even predict when it will come. And because of this, it is a good idea that you keep extra pads and tampons with you, just in case.

And although menopause occurs around the age of 50, this can happen earlier as a result of heredity, health conditions, or exposure to some radiation agents. Some women may not realize that they are already on their perimenopausal stage, and therefore, it is better to ask your doctor about menopause so you would know if you are already in that stage of your life.

How Menopause and Depression Are Related

A lot of women in their 40’s and 50’s experience menopause and depression altogether in a single period of time. This is mainly because menopause causes several chemical changes within the woman’s body that makes her more susceptible to depression. It is not surprising when a woman going through the symptoms of menopause will find herself being plunged into frequent mood swings and unexplained irritability. This is understandable and should be dealt with by her family and friends with as much patience and caring that they can muster. There need not be cause for alarm in their part just as long as they have been able to ascertain that they symptoms are really due to menopause and not some other more serious medical condition.

Menopause and depression often go together because a woman whose reproductive system has stopped going through ovulation will cease the production of the hormone progesterone. This hormone greatly affects women’s moods and when there aren’t enough levels of it in her body can even cause unexplained weight gain and increased fatigue. Apart from this, less progesterone also means that her sexual drive is not as high as before, which can have detrimental effects to her relationship with her partner. This is not to say that she will never recover from this temporary slump, with enough sensitivity and understanding, she should be able to resume her daily activities of living in due time.

What you need to understand about women undergoing menopause is that they themselves are unable to explain the changes happening to their bodies. That is why it is important that at the onset of these symptoms, a reliable medical practitioner specializing in women’s health should be consulted. Whatever doubts or fears she may have may then be answered with straight facts, alleviating her worries and making her feel better about herself altogether. Remember, menopause and depression does not have to wreak havoc in her life or yours, just as long as both are dealt with utmost care and patience.

Question by ??: Is my dad going through the “menopause”?
My dad started getting grumpy when I was about 7, but things weren’t this out of control until recently, he’s notorious for rapidly switching mood now, he gets mad at my mom and me for minor reasons or no reasons at all.

For example, this morning I mentioned that I’m very eager to learn French, and he laughed if off, said it will be a waste of time, and I couldn’t concentrate on my career and I will be a loser eventually. Literally, I just wanna slap his face.

He’s 58 this year, Isn’t this “menopause” a little bit too long?
